The 5 Themes of Geography

The 5 themes of geography include location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. The first theme of geography, location, is a particular place or position on the earth. Geographers describe location through toponyms, site, and situation. The name of a specific place is its toponym. The site of an area is its own physical features. The situation is the environmental conditions of the place. Another theme of geography, place, describes the physical or human aspects of a location. The place of a location is closely associated with the toponym, site, and situation of that specific area. Some examples of the place are landforms, human populations, and human cultures. Human-environment interaction is another theme of geography that tells geographers how humans interact with the ecosystem. The 3 main characteristics of human-environment interaction are dependency, adaption, and modification. Dependency defines the ways in which humans are dependent on nature for a living. Adaption is how humans modify themselves and their lifestyles to adjust to the environment around them. Modification is how humans alter the environment to fit their own needs. Movement is the action of humans interacting with the earth. The last theme of geography is region which describes an area of land that has common features.

Thinking Geographically: Site and Situation

1.
     A. Point A is on the ocean which is good for importing goods and fishing, but there is a large risk for sea attacks from foreign countries; no good farmland.
     B. Point B is located inside the strait which allows importing materials, fishing, and lessens the chance of a sea attack; good farmland is on the other side of the strait.
     C. Point C has fresh water available and good farmland; it is located inside the strait which allows goods to be imported and fishing, but also allows sea attacks.
     D. Point D has freshwater, but is not located near the ocean; because the point is not located on the ocean the settlers can not import goods and there is no good source for fishing; there is also no farmland.
     E. Point E has good farmland and a source of freshwater; there is a mountain for protection; the point is located on the water which allows fishing and importing goods, but also allows sea attacks.

    1. E
    2. C
    3. B
    4. A
    5. D

2.
    A. Point A is located on the ocean which is needed for a good import. During the 1650s importing goods was needed for success.
    B. Point B is located inside the strait which makes it harder for sea attacks from foreign countries.
    C. Point C has good farmland available which allows farmers to sell their crops and make money.
    D. Point D is located on a river that allows the settlers to have fresh water for crops and animals.
    E. Point E has good farmland and is located on the ocean which allows farmers to import their crops to other countries.

3. I would recommend point E for settlement. Point E is located on the ocean which allows ships to import goods and sailors to fish. It is also located behind a mountain that protects the settlement from land attacks and threats. Good farmland is nearby that lets farmers produce good crops. Lastly, point E is inside the river which makes sea attacks less probable.

4.
    1. A
    2. C
    3. B
    4. D
I would recommend point A for settlement because there is a lot of freshwater swamps nearby which will allow the settlers to have water for crops and animals. It also has no risk of sea attacks from foreign countries.

5.
    1. C
    2. A
    3. D
    4. E
    5. B
I would recommend point C for settlement. The point is located near the water which allows ships to import goods. It has good farmland which allows farmers to grow and sell crops. It also is surrounded by coal. Lastly, point C is located in a narrow strip of water that protects the settlement from foreign sea attacks.

6. If a railroad was opened on map one then my evaluation of the five points would change. I would recommend point C for settlement because the settlers could travel by railroad in a more efficient way.
